What is a Tri-Level Tournament?
The Tri-Level League is an opportunity for friends with different skill levels to compete together on the same team. The league was originally offered only to the upper division (3.5/4.0/4.5) which advanced not only to Sectionals but also to a National Invitational competing at Indian Wells during the finals week of the BNP Paribas professional event. The Texas Section has added a lower division (3.0/3.5/4.0) to the mix to allow 3.0 level players to also compete. This lower division only has advancement to Sectionals. And, for convenience, this league is run in a weekend tournament format rather than week by week.
The Tri-Level League is conducted as a one weekend tournament. Each team match consists of three lines of doubles – one line per level for the division the team is competing (upper division: 3.5/4.0/4.5 or lower division: 3.0/3.5/4.0).
Teams should limit themselves to 12 players. Players may play up one level (a 3.5 player may play on a 4.0 court). The upper division (3.5/4.0/4.5) does not allow self-rated players to participate. The lower division does not have a self-rate restriction.
The event is run in a round robin format. Depending on the number of teams entering per division, teams may be divided into multiple flights. The number of matches depends on the number of teams entering. Small draws (two or three teams) will have multiple rounds. Each team should have a minimum of three matches.
The Tri-Level League is offered in two divisions for both men and women.
Winners of the Fort Worth Event will advance to Sectionals February 9-11 in Austin with the possibility of advancing to the National Championship March 16-18, 2018 at the BNP Paribas Open Tri-Level Championship at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, California.
